www.tandfunlimited.com/1988.html Women's 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m relays are both included in this clip. The 4 x 100m was won by the United States in dramatic fashion after two poor exchanges in the 2nd and 3rd zone. Evelyn Ashford was able to overtake the Soviets and East Germans, with her arch rival Marlies Gohr running anchor for the the Germans. All in all it was a great race with some of the best sprinters of all time on the track together.

In the 4 x 400m both the Soviets and Americans broke the previous world record in this dramatic race! USA got off to a nice lead with Denean Howard running a nice lead leg, but Olga Nazarova ran a stunning 47.9 2nd leg to give USSR a commanding lead. Individual 400m Olympic champion Valerie Brisco stormed back to close the gap with a 48.7 3rd leg for the US, but Flo Jo was unable to complete the comeback as Olga Bryzgina stamped victory wither her 47.8 anchor. A truly magnificent race with some spectacular running from both teams. In a distant third place was the East German contingent running well under 3:20.

  • Thanks for posting!

  • The british runner knocked the bation out of the canadian runners hand...

  • Respond to this video... And the video shows the anchor leg again before the commercial, and just exactly where Evelyn had the baton, appearing to just be in her pinky or in two fingers, like maybe the pinky and the next one. In that straight away, she tore up that track; I have never seen Bob Hayes anchor in, what was in Tokyo, but maybe it was the angle of the camera and showing effectively just how much she made up,,,an awesome site!

  • @MrFlexybee now I understand, I have the relay taped, & ove it. Am I correct then that the "back stretch: is what Sheila Echols ran? The sportscaster, (Jenkins?) talking about that stadium having a long back stretch. Dwight Jones was very critical of the flo jo to Evelyn being a bad pass; but Frank shorter spoke right up how Evelin is such a good relay runner b/c she out her hand back, never turned back to peek, and once stick is in hand she grabbed and held on for dear life.

  • @Parker528 Even though she was fast on the curve, her ridiculous speed would have killed the back stretch i mean the 2nd leg.if Flo Jo has run the 2nd leg Ashford would have had a comfortable lead by the time she gets the baton, hence breaking the record.

  • @MrFlexybee But from how I understand it to be, of the women qualified to run in that relay, she was the fastest on the curves. Hence her running position.

  • idgaf!! its proven the URS were dopping its proven they the comity were not aware of the drugs at that time tho.. and was not on the list so you can't take the record away

  • It just proves what an amazing athlete Evelyn Ashford was, to take the baton either two or three meters behind Gohr, run her down, and finish a meter ahead. Whereas Gohr was at the end of her career, Ashford was putting up still very fast times in 1988, and I think that's what made part of the difference. I think it's kind of fitting that the video for the 4X100 segment fades out on the closeup of Ashford crossing the line ahead of Gohr, symbolizing her getting the last laugh in their rivalry.

  • yes evelyn ashford and gwen torrence were our best CLEAN sprinters ashford ran her the hell down
