The Meme
"The Meme is a concept made famous by the Philosopher/Intellectual Richard Dawkins. .........I was reading a book on philosophy. Memes are units of cultural inheritance, for example, a catchy tune -- which are differentially successful in terms of their replication and survival. The irony is that the Memes, to the extent that they determine at all -- and there is a sense in which you can be 'infected' by the Meme. Imagine a tune that you cannot get out of your head.........is a kind of non-genetic determinism. Dawkins was put forth the question whether he sees the Memes as being physiological entities......that is, particular neural patterns in the brain, or as being pure code......that is the "instructions' for building particular neural patterns in the brain. A neurophysiologist called Juan Delius, Dawkins' colleague, had a clearer explanation. He explains that the Meme is a physiological entity which has phenotypic expression in the form of behavior. But others feel that the Meme is pure code, and it may reside in a printed page, or it may reside in a computer or a tape recorder, or in a brain. I composed this guitar solo 'The Meme' after reading about Richard Dawkins. You would notice that the solo is not intended to be technically demanding but it is a melodic repetition which lingers in the mind.

an ignorant punter stumbling across this meme concept, i admit i was thinking "happy birthday to you" or "jingle bells"...Giants of our culture's "catchy tunes"! (:D really entrenched tunes caught on before copyright laws so they got different sets of words: "ring around the rosey/neener neener neener", "twinkle twinkle little star/baa baa black sheep" (minor version's israel's anthem) & sometimes slight rhythm changes as well: "down by the riverside/the old gray mare/mary had a little lamb"!

I think I know what you mean. Most of the songs associated with nursery rhymes for example were one of the most successful melodies every created. But in my opinion, the meme is something that stays in your mind for sometime and this could be any tune fr example.
