Two different versions of the classic by Shelley Fabares, done before Shelley had her hit version. The first one is the original demo, by a singer who has since been identified as Sandy Stewart (by You Tuber arizonaghost1) the second version is by Georgia Lee and was released in 1960 on Decca 31075, b/w "The Youngest Heart"
As of 3/12/2010, I also added another 3rd version by Laurie Loman. I had wanted to add it to the this one to have a comparison of the 3 versions, but was unable to edit this video in that way. I did not want to remove this one and start all over again, since this one now has almost 7,000 viewings and growing. Thanks for your support.

  • Hi Wally I'm from the England and I have only heard one version of JA and that was by SF.. Let me say that these two versions are brilliant. 1962 was my favourite year of all. There is just something special about the year, I was only 14 at the time and anything I can hear from that year is very good indeed. Thanks for the pleasure of listening to these two tracks. • I was raised on Shelley's version, never once having heard these others. However, the artists' voices here are also as fresh, clear, smooth as Shelley's.

Clearly, the musical arrangements differ (instrumentation, etc), but are quite pleasant. Many thanks for posting.

  • Alot of songs that you associate with certain artists like this one were, in fact done originally by someone else.

EXs. UNCHAINED MELODY-Righteous bros.[originally a hit for Les Baxter and his orchestra in 1955

I WILL FOLLOW HIM-Peggy March(a cover of Petula Clark's french language version called "Chariot", which itself was a cover of Franck Pourcel's original instrumental recording

KILLING ME SOFTLY-Roberta Flack ( first recorded by folk singer Lori Lieberman)

    How that for info?

  • The pic of Georgia Lee on her Decca LP 'Get On Board with...." appears to be of a female in her mid to late twenties.

  • @ausfan100 The major difference between Georgia Lee's and Laurie Loman's versions, is that Georgia's is more rock and roll, and Laurie's is more easy listening. How old do you think Georgia and Laurie were when they did their pre-Shelley versions? Shelley was 18. Georgia sounds like a teen in her version, but Laurie sounds like she's 35 plus. Still Laurie could have been a teen herself, but just sang like an adult.

  • "Indian Reservation" originally by Don Farden. "Midnight Confessions" originally by the Evergreen Blues.

  • Terrific I thought the only version was by Shelly Faberes

  • The original released version of Johnny Angel is by Georgia Lee on Decca in 1960, followed shortly after by Laurie Loman's. Two years later, Shelley Fabares revived it.

They had a lot of trouble recording Fabares - she couldn't hold a note, as she later admitted herself.

  • Patti Lynn and laurie Loman also recorded this song before Shelly did and others recorded it after Shelley but Shelley Fabares is the most famous and best one.

  • Wow what wonderful songs. Just as good and clean as Shelley Fabares's version. Makes me wonder when did music like this go away to give way to the kind of filth we are forced to listen to now.

  • Lee Pockriss wrote lots of songs which appeared on both Colpix (Shelley Fabares' first label) and Decca. The Sandy Stewart demo is wonderful. I find the Geogia Lee version somewhat... coarse. The idea of this song, I feel, is ... DREAMY -- the Sandy and Shelley versions are certainly that. Not knocking Georgia, she's fantastic, but this song needs to have the gossamer wings treatment, not the sock-hop sound.

  • According to Wicki if this is the same Georia Lee, she has a beautiful voice and what a multicultural lady. It far surpasses the Shelly Fabares version too.

  • I love this song but it makes me soooooooo sad
