  • Mick was my mandolin teacher in the early 90s. It was a local ed class and the group of us would turn up at 7.15 and then an hour later Mick would stroll in and give the lesson, no apology for being late. A year or two later I got into a session at Molly Malone's in Richmond. One Thursday I was told that Mick was coming to play banjo that night, and I mentioned my experience of his relaxed approach to timekeeping. That's when I heard that he is known worldwide as 'The late Mick O'Connor'.

  • Yes, it is wonderful playing and I think I can say that Mr. O'Connor is also one of the kindest, classiest fellars ever was. By pure chance a buddy of mine and me ran into Mick on one of those red buses in 1984. We had come over from KY with our instruments and he let us get up and play during his band's breaks. We were treated so kindly by Mick and others too. It remains at the top of my best experiences ever and we'll always be beholden to Mick. Hope you see this, my friend. Paul
