It's not like the money evaporates. It flows into the rest of the economy through all the various employees and services that are paid for. The military budget is a better target for your questions. Searfch Youtube for "Carl Sagan - On Mars & The Excluded Middle" and you'll have your answer.

I was in the Cornell Space Science Building watching this, Pretty cool. Frankly, i was even more excited about going to the third floor to use Carl Sagan's bathroom. ;-)
