Maybe it's because the musical portrays Goble here as a cowboy, when historically he was actually a Baptist preacher and missionary-therefore the portrayal of Goble in "Pacific Overtures" is out-of-date and inaccurate.
(By the way, I'm sort of a fan of Mako too. I first became aware of him as the voice of Aku in "Samurai Jack"! Ha ha.)

The part with Jonathan Goble gets left out of most modern productions of this play, which is such a shame. Mako was simply the greatest name in Asian-American acting.
