Hard landing, thrust reversers to a reverse 180 and then full burner takeoff.

  • @shizzle5150 It's different company bro.

  • Saw this once live in Linköping during an air show arranged by Saab. These fighters can use standard highways for landing and take-offs.

  • HOLY SHIT!

  • Saab should have stuck with jets because their cars look like they fell down the ugly tree and caught every limb on the way down.

  • Swedish ingenuity.

  • The Viggen. A damn ugly plane, but a damn KICK ASS ugly plane.

  • Viggen, the cruel Darth Vader look...

No you are. If you make the roads short and have STOL aircrafts then the enemy can't use your bases to land their own troops and materials, in case of an invation. You would still be able to use them though. There are about 8000 bits of road that can be used this way and most are not cleared at the end, at least the ones I checked out a month ago were not.

You're missing my point. If the road is too short for a plane, get a longer strech of straight road. The reason I said carrier planes is because they tend to have a stronger landing gear to cope with the fast and hard landings on a carrier. I am well aware of the facts you mentioned. However, the Sweds to cut away trees at the end of that road for safety. So you don't have to expect 20m pine trees at the end.

(short reply due to little internet access). No it's not true that "any carrier based plane" is V/STOL, only the Harrier is as far as I know. The reason they can operate on a carrier is because of catapults and wires. An F-14 take-off with maximum weight is over 4,000 feet (>1200m) unless a catapult is used. Viggen will take-off fully loaded on less than 500 m and clear the 20m tall pine trees at the end of that road.
