This machine has been waiting a while as a bare frame, but finally got the motivation (and money) to complete it.

It uses 5 bower fans, 4 for each of the 4 PVC pipes in the corners, and 1 to force the fog up thru the baseplate. The updraft fan is a common ceiling exhaust fan.

For the video, I had to shine my torch through the fan, as my RGB LED's are still on their way from China :)

Fog is from 2 ultrasonic misters. The sides of the machine are covered in some thick plastic sheeting to prevent wind disturbance, but the front left open for user interaction.

I am thinking about adding a microcontroller, and some pressure sensors and wind sensors, as well as a small white on blue LCD, so it can be completely computer controllable and programmable, from everything down to the colour of the lighting! My bank account needs to recover first, though :D

The thing is about 1.8 metres total height.

  • Very cool. Have you ever tried running the machine without the walls? Just using the pipes and the fog?

  • @gernith Interesting you mention this, I just removed the walls the other day! It does still work, although much more susceptible to breeze, and the tornado doesn't gain as much speed with the walls. Still impressive, though.

  • Meatball, It's actually quite quiet, the only key producer of noise is the 4 blower fans in the top of the machine, pressurizing the pipes. It's quiet enough to leave going and not be disturbed by it, though.

  • Try putting the pressure for the PVC pipes at the bottom, the vortex will be a lot more stable and wont be as susceptible to drafts.

  • look at my machine in my chanel, your machine is very cool

  • I'd really be interested in detail how to buld one of these.
