Can't find an online gift shop to buy them from so I was planning to make them, any idea of the thickness of silk I should get? 8mm is fine?

i wanted to start ribbon dancing but its not very common around here so there isnt really anywhere to get advice or take classes.
I was going to make my own ribbons by buying some material but i'm not sure how much i need as in length and width for my height (i'm 5ft) and also what material would work, other than silk. Do you have any recommendations?
