This is an original Lister SOM with our heat recovery system. A light bulb is connected between the positive of the generator and the positive of the grid. The light flashing indicates the difference between the frequencies of the two supplies. When the bulb goes out it is possible to connect the generator to the grid, and that is what happens in these videos. Once the generator is connected to the grid, the grid forces the generator to keep in sync. Closing the fuel rack results in the grid turning the engine. Opening the fuel rack causes the generator to push power on to the grid.
The danger of pushing electricity on to the grid in this manual way is that if a grid Engineer wants to shut down grid supply so that he can fix a problem, he needs to be confident that he isn't going to get electrocuted. The lighting in this engine room is grid powered, so we know that if the lighting goes out, we need to disconnect the generator.
i think you should try to slow it down some

DON'T JUST CONNECT TO THE GRID! Not only is it potentially dangerous as has been said, it is also illegal if you don't have an export licence.I think what you've achieved here is great but please make sure you are safe and legal. Also, the lights won't tell you if the grid has shut down just because they are grid powered, after all whilst you're connected you are powering the grid, and that means the lights will stay on!

Is that something to do with magnetic resistance or just the brushes on the comm?
I got a dynamo recently that really whines and much more so than the other dynamos I have.

@steamwally Thats the noise they make. No need for new bearings,Mine has been going 24/7 for 2yrs, only stopped for service every 2 months.

@formyfriends01 i forgot to add some places like the state i live in electric is .35 to .45 a killawatt depending on what island u live on and the price of oil at the time

@hisveggieness you should look into seeing how energy effecent a Lister generator is to run. and u can make it run off of waste vegetable oil or bio diesel.

I don't understand why you'd want to grid connect unless you're getting fuel for free. The cost of generating electricity, once you taken into all costs, must be fra higher than buying in from the grid.

I have just experimented with my lister after watching this vid. I used a analogue multimeter instead of a lamp and could adjust the speed of the engine untill the needle was slowly swinging from 450 volts down to about 50 volts. I didnt have the bottle to grid tie completely thou.

Diesel or Biodiesel this is a Naturally-aspirated engine. Once very popular on farms in years past. I wanna say a 1930s style. One of the only things that would survive an EMP.

Is anyone selling an automatic switchgear to connect a setup like this to the grid and disconnect when the power drops out on either side?
It seems that the load would be so great on the generator if the grid dropped out that the generator would die?
