A UKULELE! - A uke is the easiest instrument to learn to play! Folk instruments like concertina, pan flute, cuatro, steel pan, harmonica ... are all easy instruments to start with, as well (they are all 'single note' instruments so you don't have to worry about 'chords.') Of course you play chords on a uke but you only have 4 nylon strings - and these are easy to hold.

Folk instruments are easily obtainable online and in all comprehensive music stores. Most are affordably priced..

Did you know all the Beatles played ukes and used to take their ukes with them when they travelled?

A uke is said to be the easiest instrument in the world to learn to play and a good one to start with. You can solo with it, play pop, jazz, blues, classics... whatever genre you like - or strum - sing and accompany yourself! Get a uke and fill the air with music! It's easy!

What I was saying when I had to close the video is ... in your enthusiasm to learn DONT GET FRUSTRATED! You're learning a skill! And ALL skills take a little patience, practice and perseverance especially in the beginning! So go at it slowly! Do a little bit every day and you'll surprise yourself!

  • Hey Humble! glad you asked that Q! The natural chord formed on the vii is a diminished chord - but a dim chord - because of it's shape - is difficult for a beginner to hold.

A diminished 7th, on the other hand, is relatively easy - and when playing - holding the dim7th instead of the dim - works quite fine.

In the 'strum' example I gave in the video I'm playing a dim7th chord.

  • Hey thanks for an awesome video, I'm just stepping into the musical path and one of the many who's finding the guitar a little difficult, I won't give up but was curious what are some easier instruments and eventually came across your vid, was curious on why you cautioned against being too enthusiastic? A slow and steady type of deal rather than speed an fizzling out? Thankhs again for video.

  • Hey MarioFreek, i went to the renaissance fair, and to back up your point, I actually bought the ocarina, began to play, and got total control over every note in literally 1 minute... I could make a video like this one, except all i'll say is "JUST START PLAYING NOTES!!"

  • In the chord scales I wanted to check the vii chord. Is it both diminished AND 7th? I have a book called Edly's Music Theory for Practical People by Ed Roseman. You inspired me to do some more reading between uking, blogging and all that other life stuff.
