This video, through pictures and music, chronicles the creation of the historic "Stephen Stills" album in 1970. It was Stephen's first solo effort, and had his friends David Crosby, Graham Nash, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Rita Coolidge and Mama Cass Elliot performing!
Stephen Stills is an eponymous rock album by Stephen Stills, famous for his long-time membership in Crosby, Stills, & Nash. It consists of songs written by Stills and is one of four high-profile albums released by each member of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young in the wake of their 1970 chart-topping album Déjà Vu.
The album features an array of well-known guest musicians, including David Crosby and Graham Nash, who contributed vocals. Ringo Starr drums on two tracks under the pseudonym "Richie," which he also used for his contribution to the London Sessions album by American bluesman Howlin' Wolf, recorded in England the same year. Stills' album is also the only album in rock and roll history to which both Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix supplied guitar work. Hendrix would be dead before the album was released--Stills dedicated the album to "James Marshall Hendrix."
The song "We Are Not Helpless" was written in response to Neil Young's song "Helpless" from the CSN&Y Déjà Vu album and both "Black Queen" and "Love the One You're With" have remained in the performing repertoire of both Stills and CSN. "Love the One You're With," Stills' biggest solo hit single to date, peaked at #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 on December 19, 1970, and another single pulled from the album, "Sit Yourself Down," went to #37 on March 27, 1971.
The album peaked at #3 on the Billboard Top Pop Albums in the chart in the week of December 5, 1970.

  • how is the lawsuit going? hope you win and the world can hear good music without corporate intervention. your efforts go around the world.

  • @poipu96756,

    There's no lawsuit!

The dispute with Warner Brothers, filed through YouTube to allow the video under Fair Use Copyright Law, was successful. This video is in the public domain.

  • Thanks for uploading this. It was once on YT and disappeared. My favorite song off this album...along with "Church", "Black Queen".....

Still have my record and now CD; fell in love with it and still listen. Great collaboration of musicians on it as well.

"When I get restless, what can I do?" I listen to you, Stephen.

  • @Grendelmonster8u,

Yeah, that first video was mine, too. It was removed by Warner Bros when they were fighting with youtube for more money. This time it's in the public domain as a historical document, protected by fair use copyright law.

  • This is Real Music !

    Thanks, from Brazil !

  • @SPECTRE1961,

I just filed a dispute to allow this video under fair use copyright law for historical and educational purposes.

Songs like this one, with historical signifigance, timeless music and the involvement of some of the most famous and talented musicians of the time, are worth the effort...

    Thanks for the comment!

For all your glorification of stills first album, naming all the people who played on the album, hopefully you are aware at that time that many upcoming artists were playing with everyone else, just to pay their rent.

Also, Stills was facinated with Mama Cass. He idolized her.

Don't get me wrong, I own all that Stills has done,

Too bad the enormous egos of Stills and Young couldn't co-exist.

  • @RAULIMON1 who sing?

  • ¿Anybody knows all the people who ging the chorus ?

  • Awesome is the only description - the american richard thompson for mine...that ain't no small accolade neither.........farq I loved this album!

  • His voice gives me the chills, takes me right back to my youth...one of the best voices EVER

  • An old classic and a damned good one, at that, never mind just about my favorite cut off that album. Many thanks for posting this!

  • I've always thought that he had the best voice in the group. He may even be the best song writer. Of course, it's just my opinion and I could be wrong. Of course, when they added Young to the group, all bets are off.

  • Love it, love it, love it. Stephens voice is finer than rare crystal. Thank you for posting clay. Your a true gem my frind.

  • Timeless!

  • fuck yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!
