The countries of Europe that were behind the Iron Curtain, continue to face the problem of abandoned children. Adoption placement centers are already bursting with children whose struggling parents chose to take the extreme solution of leaving their kids with anyone that would care enough to notice. A mere 4% of the institutionalized orphans are there by the decisions of authorities, while the remainder 96% are left in these centers by their own parents. The latest statistics published by UNICEF show that by the end of 2005, over 9,000 Romanian newborn babies were abandoned. Every year, 10,000 infants are left in Romania's maternity wards and pediatric hospitals. The same source states that the abandonment rate has remained the same as 30 years prior, when 1.8% of all newborn babies were left in the hospitals. Even the category of adolescents has not been spared the terrors of abandonment, as country-wide, figures rose to 11,500 abandoned 14 through 17 year olds . Today, the number of abandoned children in Romania has risen to over 100,000. The numbers we share with you are not just cold figures and statistics; they represent the cries of help from every child that has been abandoned, unjustly mistreated, and too-quickly forgotten by the families and society in which they were born into.

I am going to Romania in a little over a year to go volunteer at an orphanage so that I can show these children how much God loves them!

But yeah, I do agree with you to an extent. If you're only going to abandon your kids on the street, then stop having having them!
