This song is not going to mean anything to most of my subscribers. It's a song about Gaelic Football - a memorial to Dublin's All-Ireland victory in 1995 (they haven't won since). I put it up because summer is coming and sporting Ireland will soon be consumed by 'Championship Fever' once again.

Twelve Years of Waiting
Music & Words - Kevin Dardis (Copyright)

I was 7 years old, so how then would I know
what it meant to men, to win six times in a row.
And my father's cried, sent a shiver down my spine
and obsessed me so, oh when would such joy be mine?
But the years that came, one by one and so much pain,
Only '83 saw sunshine through the rain
But from that time on, humiliation grief and pride
on Hill 16, with my mate Brennan there by my side

Our time was coming, but we never thought the wait
would last 12 long years, full of love and hope and hate
I saw every loss and by 1994
I was losing hope that we'd ever witness more
than defeat to teams that 9 times out of 10
we should have out away
Losing hope and all, but then ...

In '95, Louth and Laois we'd dealt with well
and John O'Leary led his players into hell
and the Delaney Cup stood there proudly shining bright
and we wanted him, to drink his health that night
But our foes again, they were men of Royal blood
from the County Meath, from the County Meath
in '91, the tears we'd shed were real
'93 & 4, had helped our wounds to heal
But we wanted more, another shot at Sam
But the Meath supporters,
They told us that we were damned

10 points, 10 points.

My friends and I, we walked through Dublin town
with our heads held high, no more sorrows left to drown
and in Temple Bar, I'd a stout for every score
that we had won by and on my face I wore
a smile so wide, and when Cork were safely beat
we knew brave Tyrone, would face us in the heat
of September sun, the tickets were hard to find
but standing in Croke Park, I'd just one thing on my mind

12 years, 12 years

Charlie Redmond, our killer on the field
and he scored the goal, that gave us a five point lead
that was whittled back, and then Charlie got the line
but the boys hung on, and when the whistle for full-time
blew, the tears rolled down, as we raced onto the green
to see John O'Leary, finally fulfill our dreams.

After 12 years ... we had Sam again.

  • I never thought a song about sports could nearly bring me to tears in a very good way. I don't think that I will ever look at a sporting event in the same way again. I have never been a fan of sports but you have managed to share your personal emotion in such a way that I am truly and deeply effected. Your words and your voice are very powerful. You are extraordinarily gifted with a talent that very few could honestly claim. WOW, just wow.

  • Found it finally! Bloody searching youtube for this. As ya can see, commented on this 2 years ago. Brilliant song and agree a new 2011 one would be amazing!

  • You've gotta do a new song about this year!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great song, you really captured the feeling of sports - the yearning and frustration of defeat, the power and glory of victory. I know this song ain't about hockey, but I think of the Stanley Cup whenever I hear it. Go Canucks!
