I'd had such brilliant results with converting KE1 and my Duchess to run slow and produce more smoke (check out my video list) using a single resistor that I fancied trying the same on my 1971 vintage Syncrosmoke 0-6-0. It never produced much smoke unless I ran it so fast that it would fall off on the first curve so I thought it was worth a try.

Unfortunately, with just a single resistor, the old Tri-ang motor didnt like the very low power that the resistor let through but thanks to members of this forum http://thecentralstation.myfreeforum.org (especially our resident leccy Teleman) I was told to double up with the resistors and wire them in parallel it worked a treat!
So this is the vid..

Cheers lads!

  • That looks so cool! One question though: How did you get it to "puff" as opposed to sending a steady stream of smoke through the funnel? Are your smoke units still Seuth or are they now a different make?

    Just wondering...

  • Cheers CS.

It's the old R051S Hornby 'with smoke' loco. It has a mechanism which gives the puff effect. You can see it on the vid at the very start where the body is off. The orange cog drives a small cylinder that provides the 'puff'.

  • nice work how hard would it be to convert a deisel?

  • Thanks NG. I think it would be a lot more difficult but not impossible. I know I have seen a site on the web which shows how someone used a Seuthe smoke unit and built a 'fan and shroud' mechanism that pushed the fumes out just like a diesel but didn't keep the link (sorry!). Have a google to see if you can find it.

    Cheers

  • wow, nice job Tom!

  • Thanks Ronan. It was one of those 'I wonder if..' ideas that worked well.

    Cheers
