A quick and dirty take upon request. A rare piano version for two hands. Throughout the whole symphony there are five voices which makes it rather difficult to play with only two hands:)

  • This is amazing! As a pianist always willing to play something off the beaten track, I would really love to play this - I love the original symphony a lot. Would you be so kind to send me a copy of the score? (coqdorysme (at) gmail (dot) com)

  • @coqdorysme Right now I just returned from hospital and can not scan the piece. I think it would be better to try the score. Should be available by well assorted music shops.

  • Are you a professional musician?

You play very, very well and show a lot of insight into this piece...

    Reminds me of Bruckner...

    Thanks for posting this.

I had never heard of Franz Schmidt until I checked out You Tube.

  • No, I am not a professional as can be seen from my profile.

I like Franz Schmidt a lot.

This recording is far below the standard I would like to be recorded. It was upon a listener's request. I make up with the missing quality by knowing that nobody else has a recording of this at youtube.

The one recording I am proud of is the fugue of the seven seals. >ou will find it. Originally it is an organ piece within an oratorium.

    Thanks for the compliments, nevertheless:)

  • Yes, Vienna is a good place for that:) On May 20th I will be able to listen to the piano concerto of Franz Schmidt, my first time live.

Maybe, I will attend both concert evenings.

No, I haven't heard any KarlWeigl or Kornauth, here.

The main conductor who is really fond of Franz Schmidt ist Fabio Luisi and he is doing a marvellous job.

  • You're fortunate to be living in Vienna, for there is a good chance of hearing the 4th Symphony more often there. I've heard in the states only one time, and none too well at that (Möst and Cleveland Orchestra). Ever hear any Karl Weigl or Egon Kornauth there?

  • Thank you very much for your comment with which I fully agree. Recording something like that is really a horror, as you experience the music completely differently when playing along.

However, there had been a request;)

I do play the 4. Symphonie except for the very fast third movement, which is almost impossible to cope with.

The 4. symphony is one of my alltime favourites associated with many memories.

    Regards from Vienna

  • Good effort. This movement lives or dies by tempo; not too fast and steady so the lines register with clarity and the notes line up vertically properly. I've played this at home many times, so I know how difficult it is. Bravo. You might find the transcription of the 4th Symphony easier. Another great work.

  • Actually, the second movement works a little better on the piano (in spite of comments to the contrary by Harold Truscott).

Also, I'd love to hear you perform the wonderful Scherzo and Trio third movement from this symphony. Oh, what the hell! - I'd like to hear the whole thing.

  • It was not exactly sight-reading but the result of an three-hour effort.

I might do the second movement some day, but then I will really rehearse it. The middle part is quite tricky but must be extremely clear.
