Turning over on air for the first time in 25 years. This was a test to check the timing and air start vales and is being done using a small bore hose - as a result she is only just turning over

  • I have one of these in my truck... a little heavy, but it gets the job done.

  • I know that the Bergius-Kelvin (Kelvin Diesels) Company was purchased by Ruston & Hornsby in 1966, who in turn where purchased by English Electric, which of course became GEC. After that I suppose it became whatever company GEC became. It's pretty interesting to see how several companies all became linked. A nice video. Does this engine have indicator cocks?

  • Where was it for 25 years not running?

  • Well, Mirrlees was where the 3 factories ended up, in Stockport. That's where the spares service remains. Only, it's MAN Diesels not Mirrlees, Ruston or Colchester. The B&W on MAN was also ditched. I believe that had an effect on some European factories. It's just MAN now.

  • Thanks for the info. I guess the same probably applies to Mirrlees Blackstone, who were also taken over by MAN B&W.

  • Well basically the Ruston name ended once they were taken over by MAN in Germany. As far as I know there is only a Spares service remaining in Stockport but a service and maintenance factory still remains in Colchester. No Ruston (RK) engines are being built in the UK. I believe some rights were sold abroad in Korea or someplace similar. Hope that answers the question!

  • Are Ruston still designing and building new engines, or are they now just a factory making MAN B&W designs?

  • I worked for Ruston and then MAN as it was taken over by the Germans. Great days. Sadly, there is not a lot left of it now. Another example of great British engineering lost forever....
