These are the heavy hitters. The big dogs. They're not playmakers or finesse artists and they don't dish out assists. If the 2010 Ford Shelby GT500 is Dick Butkus snuffing out a Jim Brown thrust up the middle, then the 2010 Hennessey Performance Engineering Chevy Camaro SS HPE550 is Lawrence Taylor with radar lock on Joe Theismann's right leg. And it's not just that they're powerful and merciless, but intentionally provocative and intimidating, too. On looks alone, either of these cars is enough to make the drivers of other machines cower like a three-legged Labradoodle.

They are, of course, muscle cars in the rawest, most vicious sense of the term. And they're quicker, faster, meaner and flat nastier than anything built back when Ol' Shel and Don Yenko were just guys. And not by a little bit either.

But which is the better beast? To find out, we drove these two all-Americans on the street, at our test track and on the Dynojet chassis dyno at MD Automotive in Westminster, California. Then we did some big smoky burnouts just to piss off the Sierra Club. By the time we were through, Greenpeace had threatened to blockade the Inside Line garage and the Obama administration was seriously considering a unilateral deployment of the fun police. Didn't matter. By then the tires were shot and we had our winner.

  • I have come to realize that these guys are just Mustang fans. When it came to the Mustang vs. Camaro vs. Challenger, they said the Challenger was easier to live with and had better steering and had great suspension but still put it in last, and the Mustang won because it was simply faster on the quarter. The Camaro was faster in this video and is cheaper than the Mustang and they still put the Mustang on top? I love both cars equally but this is getting ridiculous.

  • @Artix40: Top Gear? You mean that biased british show thats bias against anything thats not from Europe? That show? I hope you watch that show just for the jokes and not actually use them as a credible source for information.

  • @HottestGuyOnInternet Stock Camaro will beat a Stock Mustang, just saying :/

  • @AdverbAdjective Damn it, after a little research, I retract my statement about the whole Hennessey/Shelby mod shop thing. Which brings me to another point, who in the hell is going to be able to afford a 65 to $75000 Mustang? Ford should just come out and say it, we're going to try and compete with the ZR1. The pro stock facts have been researched also, I couldn't let you have your 15 minutes last more than 5.

  • @AdverbAdjective Hey, there you are again. Just checking up on ya. You do realize that Hennessey and Shelby are AFTERMARKET MOD shops, right? By the way, congratulations on Ford putting 1 car in the top half of the Pro Stock Field at today's Arizona Nationals. Hey, here's another fun fact, did you know that Ford hasn't won a Pro Stock Championship in over a decade? Crazy, huh?

  • @UuDonKnowMe the gt500 is stock...

  • stock mustang versus modded camaro? hahaha how about hennessey mustang vs hennessey camaro or stock mustang vs stock camaro. either way the mustang always wins because the camaro sucks ass

  • No disrespect to Edmunds . But a 4.6 sec. 0-60 mph time with a '10 Shelby GT500 is horrible .

  • @TheOneMetallica1: Yes I have watched Top Gear. Its actually an entertaining show. But in the past, manufacturers have called them on their B.S. And their only response is "this is entertainment".

  • @V8Supercar1 I don't think you've actually watched top gear before. When they do reviews on cars they joke around yes but they use statistics and real world knowledge and experience with the cars they drive. They're just honest when they review cars. When they did reviews on the mustangs and corvettes they were honest about the handling but they admitted they were more fun that just about any other car to drive.

  • @jdude2012 Ok well lets put fords top of the line mustang against the hennessey hpe1000, ill make a long story short... Hennessey is gunna rape the shit out of it. Sorry to bust yalls little ford dream bubble, but to make youselfs feel better you can go against a more formidable opponent for the mustang, like a hybrid or some electric car.

  • I dont give two shits that they said the mustang was better lol The Camaro is (in my opinion) a better looking car. New or old. Chevy runs deep.
