This is a song about an obsession meeting an obsession.

As the sun is setting on these Arkansas woods
I think about you and the world--how neither are good
Hear them devil dogs barking, gonna tear me apart
It can't be worse than what you did to my heart

The men are coming, I guess it's my time
I did all I could to abandon my crime
I did it for you and you don't even care
You and I, we could have really gone somewhere

Now Missouri was a hell of a ride
That mean old Mississippi is so muddy and wide
Now, Illinois, won't you be kind, please?
With their whips and their pistols, the got me on my knees

I'll be hung high
In them burning blue skies
How could you be so cold
I gave you all I had
And all I could get
And now I'm dying over silver and gold
I fulfilled your dreams
And made you scream
My whole life I tried to be bold/this world is so strange and old
I gave you what you wanted
And you spit in my eye
And now I'm dying over silver and gold

When I first saw you I thought I had died
Too pretty to be on this lonelier side
I could have weeped at the sight of your face
Either an angel or some sinister wraith

Well I followed you up to the stars
Then back to earth in some Michigan bars
I knew from your eyes you had expensive tastes
And that was one thing which I couldn't relate

Had to make you mine before it was too late
Then the idea hit, I swear it was fate
I'll rob a man of his watch and chain
Anybody try to stop me, I'll blow out their brains

I never was a man who cared much for the law
In my eyes, everything's got a flaw
I found me a man and I found him quick
I took him down, with just an axe and a stick

Blood on my clothes but I didn't much care
I had enough gold to make you love me for a year
Rings in my pockets and jewels on my back
I threw his body 'neath the railroad tracks

I brought you my haul and set it on your door
When I told you what I did, you fell on the floor
Then you scratched and clawed and beat me bad
Gonna tell you I love you but you made me feel so sad

Now I'm standing on the gallis pole
Wish all that loot could buy me my soul
These brutes are gonna hang me in the southern sky
If you won't have me, I don't care to be alive

Some philosophers say charity is life
To me, charity is just a sacrifice
All I ever wanted was to hold your hand
And now it would seem my soul is damned

Gonna drop my body when that gold clock chimes
I swear were living in some terrible times
And like that girl with the white turtle dove
Won't you tell the world I died for love
