Producer / Owner Doug McBride, of Gravity Studios in Chicago, walks us through the Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor. While labeled as a "mastering" compressor, Doug likes to use this high-end piece of hardware on a variety of applications. Whether using it to beef up a guitar or to distort a vocal during the tracking process, Doug finds that the Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor can be used in pretty much any compression situation you might encounter.

Take a step into Gravity Studios with us and find out yet another reason why recording your album in a fully-fledged recording studio can really pay off.

  • Again. Thanks for the overview, but I can't believe you don't play any audio through the unit to let people hear what it's doing! It's set up in the studio, it's on, it's got audio playing through it, you are an "expert" user...but you don't let us hear it. We would love to hear it. A single guitar or vocal track maybe?

  • i spy some barefoots! lovely :)

also nice to see thermionic culture unit as well, the pheonix is it?

  • Im going to build a bigger one that takes 2 hands to turn each knob...

  • @dana6156 Fair point, but Youtube's data compression always DESTROYS audio. With a unit like the Shadow Hills comp it's a joke trying listening to it on Youtube at all.

  • Thats a lot of KPD right there... Love the LRF switch... :)

  • @andycapist1 So..you are calling Tom Dowd a liar? Watch the doc, the master has spoken, and there is no difference/.

  • I still choose to mix in the Box>i love analogue gear though...but what you can do ITB you cannot have as much control in the Analogue world>But Mastering>Should ALWAYS be outside the box though. :)

  • @ShSwStudios I'll get similar results.... *results may vary from state to state. Offer not valid in MA.

  • @analyzingfunny no you wont ;)

  • not for 7000 bucks. No thanks, I'll get the same result with Linux/Ardour and the LASPA plugins.

  • white boyz love distortion, i think their brains are distorted..lol

  • @AndyCrystalOfficial trust me, I believe you! Cheaper gears may not do as good as a job, but a lot of these devices are heavily inflated! It's a very piece of gear nevertheless!

Besides, it's a mastering equipment, so every Harry, Tom, and Dick shouldn't be looking to purchase this unit.
