Shaking quartz pebbles (in a transparent plastic container) gives light (triboluminescence).
I gathered some 25 small opaque pieces of roughly cut quartz (max. size 2.5 cm) and put in a thick transparent plastic jar.
This experiment was using milky/opaque quartz type (sometimes called quartzite). The shaking was VERY hard (almost painful to keep on doing it). See also: http://www.iol.ie/~geniet/eng/dowth.htm#quartztest
