Over christmas i had the idea to give a typewriter off as a gift, but i wanted to add USB functionality to it, to make it actually useful.

This is the finished typewriter in action.

Please see my blog for full write-up and lots of photos of the process.

The USB Typewriter conversion kit i used, can be bought from USBTypewriter.com

  • it's not because it works and sounds crazy, it's already going to be useful.. who the heck would use a typewriter to write documents on a laptop? for what reason? what's the point??? what are you thinking????????

  • @ronald017 I think everyone is caught up on the laptop... but it was just what i had lying around, hooking up the usb to the back of my desktop is annoying. If i had known, i would of done it that way on-top of my desk. Maybe i should pick up a usb hub.

  • Is this real?

  • @justkitteh "This is f***ing useless" - my reply to that is as follows.

Well maybe, but typewriters are useful.

  • now hard copy your work every time you make it!

  • @CasePhoto so to make 100% clear, it is in NO WAY strapped to the laptop, theres a 2 or 3 foot USB cable that runs out the back of the Typewriter which you plug in to whatever you want, the typewriter itself is completely mobile..... Wasn't really meant for laptop use more desktop oriented as its heavy. The laptop was not harmed in the process and was only used to debug, it can close fine.....

  • @justkitteh I think you're mistaken on something, this typewriter is USB based. I only plugged it into the laptop because it was what i was debugging it with. It could just as easily be used on a desktop. It is thicker then a normal keyboard, however it does come with its own carrying case. Again, it can do anything a normal USB keyboard can do, so by relation it cannot be more useless than a keyboard.

  • @CasePhoto No, this is a laptop, which can no longer close... thus you've paid extra for mobile computing which is no longer mobile. Type-writers are awesome (I use to take them apart and rebuild them as a kid), but they are fucking useless today. People put money into aesthetics, sure they do, sure you and I both do, however they are aesthetics which improve or do not hinder performance most of the time, and if they do, they are worth it... like a mini skirt.

    This is fucking useless.

  • @justkitteh I'm probably the only one that sees a keyboard as something useful.

Its now a keyboard, in fact its even more useful then a normal keyboard as it can output to paper and docs at the same time.

    Usb TypeWriter > Keyboard.

  • @justkitteh Sorry, I ignored your description.

    "to make it actually useful"

    Ahahahahahahahahahahhahahahhahahahaha-no.
