The UMaine ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) Coaster Car team traveled to the University of New Brunswick to compete in the annual Coaster Derby Challenge this past Saturday, Sept. 26th. Umaines Black Bear unseated a three-year defending champion and won best design and best new entry - all in the team's first year at the competition.
The Coaster Derby is a gravity powered racing car competition. The idea is similar to Soap Box Derby, except the race is held on approximately one-mile of steep and twisty campus road. The cars are required to maneuver and stop as well as to coast effectively. The team started working on the car in the fall of 2008 to get it ready for this falls competition. Special thanks to our excellent driver, Corey Vincent.
We also brought home $700.00 in prize money for the department. We plan on recruiting more freshmen from MEE 101 and making improvements on this years car to re-enter next year. Our team consists of 10 Mechanical Engineering students, ranging from freshmen to seniors.
Glad i got to be a part of it this year, even tho we barely got the car built in time. So when are we gunna make this thing bi-annual?

@kbw1988 even with the rain this year the trip was awesome! I only wish it were a little less wet on the course so I could really push the car through that last tire barrier. Although everyone breaking stuff on that curb was really cool too!
