Barbieri yes. She is more of an acquired taste than even Callas or Gencer and Oliveiro (to Americans). She has a quick vibrato and so forth but honey da girl got a tempa, and it's nasty. Listen to her early 50s Amneris performances. She could make the throne of King Tut split in two with that power. It's another mezza-vociaccia, but whatever.

@wotanman I was thinking the same thing about the hair and makeup. They wanted to age her and make her look worn out, but she looks kind of clown like instead.

Here is wonderful art to hear, to look at, and to treasure. Cassilly would have had a much longer career (with a voice intact) if he hadn't gone the heldentenor path, pitifully. Or if he had waited. Shirley Verrett never took a misstep in her brilliant career, and is a model of bel canto art at the very highest level, a true diva. She never developed any bad habits, as she gracefully climbed the staircase to Olympus, few others share such as Simionato and Barbieri. Brava Diva!
