"Stompin' at the Savoy", is a 1934 jazz standard composed by Edgar Sampson. It is named after the Savoy Ballroom.

Although the song is credited to Benny Goodman, Chick Webb, and Edgar Sampson, and the lyrics by Andy Razaf, in reality the music was written and arranged for Chick Webb's band by Sampson, who was the band's alto saxophonist. It was recorded as an instrumental by both Webb and Benny Goodman, whose recording was the bigger hit. Lyrics were added by Andy Razaf, who wrote the lyrics to many popular songs. Goodman and Webb got their names added to the song when their bands recorded it (Wiki).

  • love this guys playing. and i think its super cool that he looks like he could be teaching your high school english class but happens to also be one of the greatest jazz guitarists!

  • I love how his solo totally transcends all the theoretical bull shit they teach you in school. His first lick is a Db minor pentatonic blues lick and it's over a Dmaj 7. In school they would tell you thats wrong, but it sounds great to me. This is a guy who really hears and feels what he plays. I wish there were more guys like this playing around.
