  • That is K01D!!! I cannot believe that it can even get that cold in the lower 48!

  • Although this was the coldest it got during the winter of 2006-2007, it's not even close to how cold it's gotten in other years. Temperatures colder than -40, even -50(F), aren't completely unheard of in this area of Minnesota and North Dakota.

Back during the record-breaking arctic outbreak in 1996, I remember recording a WS4000 on a TWC local forecast displaying a temperature of -52°F. Unfortunately, I either lost the video or recorded over it.

  • That's just SOOOO cold though! I cannot imagine a winter that bitter. Are windows there made of plexiglass (probably incorrect spelling) because I'd imagine -30 would bust out glass windows.

  • There are actually plenty of places with glass windows, and I've never known anybody who's experienced a broken window. You're usually told not to hang anything on windows over the winter, though, because there's a chance they could crack. A bigger problem in this kind of weather is frozen pipes. This can be a particularly messy problem because as water freezes, it, of course, expands. You take a pipe filled with water, freeze it, have it expand, and eventually it could cause the pipe to burst.
