Beautiful, uplifting, and extremely well shot and acted, The Roper is a feel-good short in the style of Beasts of the Southern Wild.

There is so much more to movies than Hollywood. It is original, beautiful short films like this that enliven cinema.

    Sundance forever.

I like you thoughts except for the for the part you think the rider has more of a chance of getting hurt... come on man... the calf, the horse and the rider all can get hurt i'd say the calf the most. I'm not against roping, but I am against bullshit... realize when you're roping that calf it is an animal not unlike your horse... would you rope your horse and throw it down?? I bet not. You wouldn't want to hurt it. A calf... well hell yes, because it's gonna be hamburgers. With cheese maybe.

Go figure we would be taken as granted by alien, stronger species and they would feel entitled to take our freedoms and do with us whatever pleases them. That's what you're doing self-entitled by ruling their lives on your terms. Though, fences, bridles, saddles, whips, spores and deprivation of their freedoms are used to break and tame them to the human needs or they would not follow with human rules otherwise. Try a wild horse. That's the difference you definitely do not want to acknowledge.

Maybe the way you do it. Grabbing the horns is not painful. Laying them down on the ground by lifting them up first isn't either. Dropping them on the ground might be uncomfortable. Painful, maybe. But if you don't know how to do it, it sure will. And yes, either way, they get over it... and it is usually without injury. The cowboy has more of a chance of getting hurt. Our skin just isn't as thick as a cow's is.

Vblood, why are you here??? FYI: Roping horses ENJOY roping. They are excited about doing their jobs well and pleasing their bosses. There is a bond between rider and horse like none other. Stop worrying. The calves don't get hurt, they live really good lives, much better than in the wild, where they risk being torn to shreds by wild animals as calves in a much less humane way. And I dare to say, much better than as a rescued pet fattened to obesity by someone who thinks animals are like people.
