@eccentricman87 Precisely, so why do people persist in making the comparisons which we all know are so odious.

I saw this a Cropredy - both versions are stunners. Neil Young has a huge RnR heart but little sense of structure. RT sounds all over the place but you keep hearing the odd phrase that tells you where he's up to: notice that although it all sounds 'free' both rhythmically and musically, you still can tell when he's about to signal the end of the solo. Underneath it's as tight as a sonata.I believe RT could have walked of stage and written down the entire solo.

No one, but no one plays like Richard, awesome amazing brilliant original, Neil's pretty cool too, I'm a big fan of both but if pushed to choose it's Mr Thompson for musicianship, both are truly great wordsmiths.

I agree. I like the way Neil plays. But can you imagine RT playing an extended "Rockin' in the Free World?" That would be the ultimate! And "Cortez." I was imagining Neil watching RT and thinking, "That's what I would play like, if I could."
This is how Neil Young would play if he were as good as RT.

Ah, but Neil's messiness is his brilliance! I love them both, RT is the more skilled of the two, but it's not always about skill.
