@paulinesmith44 ->"I personally don't understand the hatred and venom with which so many people want to 'unite' Ireland. I'm a Scot"
You just answered your own question in the next sentence. The independence thing for Scotland can in no way be compared to the situation in Northern Ireland due to the vicious history of the last century which still lingers on in peoples minds.Imo you can't compare. Also you are not differentiating between the IRA and the modern splinter groups such as the RIRA etc

@robsargent4 Yes you would imagine that would be the best route to take would be to get around a table and work out their differences. Unfortunately I think there's just too much bad blood that has been allowed to seep too deeply into the hearts and minds of many. Again I agree that anyone who commits such crimes are NOT hero's however, simply BECAUSE rather than in SPITE of a religion and patriotism, these people are being applauded. Very sad.

@paulinesmith44 who commits murder, robs banks & sells drugs can hide behind religion or patriotism & think themself a hero (I'm talking about people on both sides of the divide here).
-
@paulinesmith44 interesting point of view...I'd say the Ulster Protestants/Unionists & Irish Catholics/Republicans actually have more in common with each other than they do with any government down in Westminster, despite all the bad blood between the two groups, so surely it would make more sense for them to work together & thrash out whatever solution they can think up together, rather than spending all their time wanting to thrash each other more literally. I don't really see how anyone can

I personally don't understand the hatred and venom with which so many people want to 'unite' Ireland. I'm a Scot and would have an independent Scotland tomorrow if I could. But if the majority of my fellow countrymen votes against it and wish to stay part of the union then so be it. Just as the N.I. wish to stay British who has the right to tell them other wise? NO land belongs to anyone. It's ALL God's land, be thankful for what he has given you and live in peace.

@bweber2k Do you not realize that we are ruled by the Europe and soon it will be Germany and France ruling us. Think what we can do about our country's future, that is what we should be worrying about not the past.....

@TheRacistOwl actually, your wrong. The Irish were not being supplied by the British, it was the other way around. Britain needed supplies from Ireland to fuel the industrial revolution, so they took all the food away from Ireland. Meanwhile, the poor folk in Ireland did not have any food and often had to watch as food was being shipped off to England. Also, this was while the Irish were still under the Act of Union and did not have freedom from Britain.
