Great song and I speak as someone implacably opposed to the IRA but very interested in Irish history - however I wonder if there is some slight irony in having a pic of Michael Collins in the uniform of a Free States commandant - surely his actions and those of the Free States Army in crushing the anti treaty faction ensured that Ireland would not be a nation once again and helped institutionise partition

Exactly. Irishmen took the English language and shamed those whose language it was.

We didn't "take" the language, we were forced to speak it.

people seem to have the impression that it is religion that is keping ireland seperated. this is not true, many prodestants are republicans. the greif lies between republicans and loyalists who wish to remain under british rule. intersesting fact: Ireland is the only country in the EU that is occupied by an outside country this includes countries that were part of the ussr.

What about the act of settlement?
Seems the union is sectarian, or do you agree with it oliver?

Almost all British people oppose the Act of Settlement. We just never seem to get around to abolishing it because there always seems to be something more pressing to get done. I would certainly favour its abolition. (To be honest, I would abolish the monarchy after the current Queen passes on)

My great-granddad was a Northern Irish Orange Lodge member, then he came to England and married a Catholic.

Yes, the Irish people suffered immensely. The first modern use of the word holocaust was used in reference to the Irish in relation to what happened to the Irish in the 1800s. Of course, such tales of sorrow have been visited upon so many people. Thankfully, the Irish no longer suffer anymore.
