Former ERresident Jing-Mei Chen, once known as Deb Chen, returns to resume her career in medicine and immediately makes an impact when she treats a runaway teenaged girl who bitterly keeps her identity secret.

Actually, @juliabohemian, you're sadly mistaken. She did not divulge the information.. the spouse just happened to be standing there (conveniently or not). HIPAA is a federal law that would not result in a doctor's loss of license which is regulated at the state level. In fact, no HIPAA violation that has ever been reported has ever resulted in any such action or even a fine. The federal government allows most of the providers to take corrective action and has closed nearly all cases.

Chen could never say a single line without sneering.

HIPAA prevents the doctors from telling anyone other than the patient about any communicable diseases. It's the CDC's responsibility to report it to the sexual partners. Chen could lose her license for that, if this were real life. The husband could sue her for divulging that information.
