Chinky Pin, is a fine fiddle tune in the key of D. From what I can determine the melody is likely based on a traditional British/Scottish fiddle and bagpipe piece, "My Love She's But a Lassie Yet." Some suggest that it got started in the USA during the westward expansion. Like all fiddle tunes it has other names for example "Big Town Fling," "Buffalo Nickel" and more commonly "Chinquapin" or "Chinquipin," Thus the "Chinky Pin" name probably is a folksy derivation of "Chinquipin" a tree which is a member of the white oak family and native to the east-central USA including much of Appalachia.
The tune is usually played in D major and in standard tuning with an typical AABB sequence.
The great West Virgina fiddler Clark Kessinger seems to be the first to have recorded the melody under the "Chinquapin" title, and of course he played it at break-neck speed -- which was usual for him. This is a bit more sedate version.

I am playing along with a guitar/mandolin recording on a 2001 Gibson Sam Bush model F-5 mandolin with J75 D'Addario strings and a Wegen TF-140 pick.

  • @amarcordeon Thank you Lillo! You kind remarks are always most appreciated!

  • Sounds great Bernie! I like the sedated speed myself. Clark did burn the fiddle up on his tunes though.

  • @sizefam4 Hi Gary! For some reason I missed your comment -- thanks so much!

  • Hey Bernie, that sounded great! Very happy melody. I've heard it as Chinquipin, but not the other titles. How do you like your Wegan pick?

  • @mgwhitehead I don't know how I missed your comment Martin -- but here is a belated THANK YOU!
