How a pipe organ swell box works. When the shutters open, note how the tone changes as well as the volume increasing. Most pipe organs have one or more swell boxes (or enclosed divisions). Please excuse the sound quality - this was taken with a cheap digital still camera. The jerky action of the shutters is explained by the non-organist at the console and the simple mechanical linkage used in this organ.

  • short but cool. Viol d Orchestre you might be hearing

  • Viol d'Amour on the stop knob, Viola da Gamba on the pipes, not quite as keen but with this sound quality you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference. It's in the Choir division of an English cathedral organ. I'm sure someone could do a better demo - this was an afterthought from a recording session to illustrate things in a presentation.
