From Toronto,
Aricept helps improve memory in those with Alzheimer's. According to a research study on over 300 patients, those who received the drug were more likely to have improvement in memory and attention. The drug doesn't stop progression of the disease.

From Maryland,
The Avandia saga continues. Despite one FDA scientist recommending that Avandia- the Diabetes drug- be removed from the market, a panel has voted overwhelmingly to keep the drug on the market. The drug will likely have a stong "black box" warning agains use in those with heart disease.

From New Jersey,
Coffee and exercise may work together to prevent skin cancer. Research, conducted in mice, showed that the two worked together to increase apoptosis- a type of cell death- that lowers the chance of damaged cells becoming cancerous.

And finally from Oxford,
Alcohol may be bad for your bowel. Researchers, studying nearly 500,000 patients, noted that those who drank more a large glass of wine or a pint a day had a 10% higher risk of developing bowel cancer; the risk rose to 25% in those who drank more than 30 grams per day.

For Insidermedicine in 60, I'm Dr. Susan Sharma.
