The Decemberists playing A Cautionary Song at the Lifestyle Communities Pavillion in Columbus Ohio, on November 10, 2006.

While Colin, Nate, and Jenny were performing this song, the other half of the band was wandering through the audience with percussion instruments. I will now attempt to describe what followed, though I couldn't really see that well:

Colin, after introducing the Decemberist Family Players, announced that they would perform an historical re-enactment of the Battle of Gallipoli (during WWI). One of the band members in the audience would represent the "Austrailian Doughboys" and recruited some audience members to fill the ranks; another band member would represent "Johnny Turk", likewise recruiting an army, armed with machine guns; and the final band member would represent the camels and other desert animals, who in turn recruited others to be camels, cacti, etc. Colin announced that the Austrailian commander ordered the charge, and as the Austrilians rode horse back over the hill and were gunned down by the Turks. Then the camels stampeded and everybody died. "Then a meteor landed."

The band then finished the song, and we all went home, thoroughly entertained.
