  • Sonically this is the best I've heard (I have the RCA Guild and Naxos versions), but this is far superior.

  • Actually this is the RCA CD release.

  • Oh my God! Why my CD does not sounds like this one???

    Thanks

  • No idea; is there more than one RCA release? I've heard the Guild release is supposed to be the best.

  • This is an Otello I would have loved to hear onstage as well. Magnificent.

  • 1'51 - OMG!!!

there's still no one else who still sounds quite like him,and this role was HIS

if someone put Jon Vickers in therapy(for scaring the hell out of us,wonderfully) he might come close to sounding like this but still

  • Vinay was a great artist. Absolutely no doubt about that. And he's in very good form here. I forget the name of the critic who called Vinay's voice at its best "Rembrandtian." Not sure that I could explain this, but even so, I agree:)

  • @raigekimaru I agree with you according to Vinay, Giacomini, but hmmm, Bergonzi started his career as a baritone, so I don't see him as a "pure" tenor, and I don't believe Kaufmann will grow into this dramaric repertoire, but we will see...

  • @Cantormatis While he began with lighter repertoire, as was right for him at that time, he has moved into the heavier roles and is now singing in the dramatic Fach. While I can understand that not all who move into this Fach belong there, from what I have heard, Kaufmann does. That said, I agree that Vinay was indeed one of the kings of dramatic tenors...

  • @philipvanlidth Kaufman's voice is dark but he is not a dramatic tenor. THIS is a dramatic tenor.

  • @Ninjaphil24

baritones have a chance too. I am a baritone and my teacher says I could possibly be a heldentenor when i get older. in fact, it is actually more common for dramatic tenors to start out as baritones, especially given the male voice gradually gets higher with age starting at around college (although this is rather counter intuitive)

  • @raigekimaru Dark tenors exist but are not allowed to evolve. Because when you are young you are forced to sing light stuff, singing heavy stuff even if you are a heavy voice is... bad for you. Hence only light tenors get real chances, because their rep is acceptable at a young age.
