Zack and Cloud are both even when it comes to heroism, not only them though everyone is just as good as they are, even Genesis....... When you get trough the whole story the Shinra are the actual bad guys, if they had never experimented on humans like on Genesis the whole thing would have never happened. In Crisis Core not only Zack is lost Angeal and Genesis are lost too and thanks to them new Heroes are born.

@scriberox1996 after zack beats angeal he goes back searching for sephiroth and they talk at where genova is held that's when cloud comes in to the picture, he gets stabbed by sephiroth (cloud) and zack takes him with him along the way cloud gets injected with the alien genova cells, so cloud was NEVER a soldier, he thought he was for a long time cause the cells and his injury really screwed with his head he thought he was zack, you can read all the history on wikipedia.
