@stormcresong "ALS can not exist without BLS first." How more true can that be!?! yea EMT-B cannot go beyond their scope of practice, but without BLS determining a need for ALS is present, well than I believe BLS is more important :D
ALS can not exist without BLS first. So I don't get why this guy says all EMT's do is drive. I am an EMT and I do about 40 calls a month ride in. We may not be able to do as much as the Paramedic; however, there are alot of things even Medics have to do before they get to those things. And those pre- ALS treatments are... you guessed it BLS treatments.
Seriously, what service would let a medic perform a pericardiocentesis!?!?!? This video is totally misleading. I served as an EMT-B for four years before becoming a medic and I did a hell of a lot more than "just drive".
I thought it hit it right on the head. When you run a BLS crew you usually get to do stuff depending on your protocal. But basics on an ALS crew usually are the driver/vital machine. Basics are great for minor trauma too, they do get to get good calls. Being a new paramedic kind of puts it out there of how much i didnt know as a basic. Even the intermediates didnt know much. And the best part about basics is... they carry all the stuff.
If I could expand on what jo3jo3221 states. Unfortunately you are incorrect in your speech. EMT-Basics also have patient care and deal with what are called Basic Life Support calls, which can include minor injuries, minor illness's etc. Jo3jo3221 is right that we can run an ALS call without any medics. EMT-Basics are NOT just drivers. Basic's also deal with patient care. There are just a higher number of ALS calls over BLS calls. I would consider more research next time......
Im an emt-BASIC nobody ever steps over someone to get to a body , anyway I like the vid but we do more than assist medics ok we can use the aed ( retard proof ) but we also do first aid and cpr and also als assist skills . Not to mention we also can run an als call if there are no medics , we can administer nitro , epi , tylenol ,and o2 , and there is no als without bls
