I recently placed Leon Fleisher's recorded performance of the Ravel Concerto for the Left Hand on my channel. I had originally planed to upload the Paul Wittgenstein recording for comparison purposes. However, as there are already several uploads on You Tube, I decided instead to upload these recorded performances of Wittgenstein playing transcriptions of Donizetti and Wagner.
Paul Wittgenstein was born in Vienna on November 5, 1887. His great uncle was the great violinist, Josef Joachim and his principle teacher was Theodore Leschetizky. Wittgenstein had a very successful debut in 1913. Unfortunately, this success was cut short by the advent of WW1 during which Wittgenstein lost his right arm. Wittgenstein, who was determined to continue his career as a concert pianist, commissioned several works for left hand from distinguished composers of the period, including the Prokofiev Piano Concerto No. 4, Britten's Diversions, and, of course, the Ravel Concerto for Left Hand.
Paul Wittgenstein died in Manhasset, New York on March 3, 1961
The Wittgenstein family were a talented lot! If somewhat unfortunate, and, in the case of Ludwig, quite mad...
