A slow-motion film worth studying, from the oldest high school shot-put film on YouTube. The thrower is still one of the great oddities of high school shot-putting. Short on brute strength and weighing a slight 182 lbs., Vic Damon reached 60 feet, 5 inches with the 12 lb. shot in 1963 and was Missouri state champion. He attended Southwest High in Kansas City, MO, USA, where he also ran sprint-relays and cross-country.

While not entirely flawless as shown here, Damon's form has four key elements: (1) an extremely fast, smooth, and controlled glide into throwing stance, completely without a hitch or slightest hesitation, (2) a bent throwing arm held at an approximately 90-degree alignment with the spine throughout, (3) a full 180-degree shoulder rotation that begins, again without hitch or hesitation, in perfect unison with hip rotation, and (4) a final thrust of the shot with elbow still held high in that 90-degree alignment with the spine.
