I first read about this song in a Harvey Pekar story. With Harvey's recent passing, it was nice to find this on YouTube. Thanks for posting it!

I would also think of pretty early, since the band is still playing with lead alto here.
If I'm right informed the second herd allready lead alto and let Stan Getz play lead on tenor. Whenever it alto was needed after that, Herman did it himself.
So I would place my bet on first herd or maybe beginning second.
However pick up band still is another option, as the band did not always stay together.

Dad, David (or Dave) Madden was in the 4th Herd, and I don't see him here. TS, Baritone. If you happen to see video of him with Herman, or with Harry James, I'd be obliged if you could drop me a note.

Folks, I can ID this as a nice CBS special called "Those Swingin' Singin' Years" (hosted by a future president!) -- a recreation of the big band era with various stars. Perk solos here on tenor. According to my notes, this early video was shot March 5, 1960 and aired March 8. Woody leads a pick up band including some past and present Hermanites. And now I must get back to waxing my moustache.

I was wrong about Nimitz not playing with Woody. According to Wikipedia he was in the band '53-'55.

I'm pretty sure this was a studio date with several alumni on it, but I don't think this was a working band.
Gozzo is there, and Pete Candoli, and that's Al Porcino on Pete's left. I sure would like to know who the first tenor soloist was. Bob Cooper, maybe? Then Bill Perkins, for sure. The lead alto looks like Gus Bivona to me and I think the baritone player is Jack Nimitz. To my knowledge, I don't think either of them ever played on the band . (I may be wrong about some of this.)
