(I presented this poem of mine at the Sigma Tau Delta 2010 conference in St. Louis)
The Wolf Cub
My body's sore, my belly pinched;
My heart is broken, twisted, wrenched.
Little Red, what have you done
To my only precious one?
Father went into the woods
In the hopes of finding goods
For us to eat, father and son
A fallen beast, two feast on one.
A girl in red did pass us by
She smiled, batted playful eye
And bid my father follow her--
Follow her to Grandmother.
"I have with me cake and wine
So my granny sick can dine."
It sounded good; my stomach growled
I felt so starved I almost yowled.
She mentioned treats, all for the crone
Then wandered through the woods alone.
I gazed at Father, curious...
Would we both act carnivorous?
"You wait here, my little pup.
When I return, we both shall sup."
And with those words, he ventured out
Followed Red with scent in snout.
I was lonely in those woods
Without the cake and other goods.
Everything felt big and bad
So I ran off to follow Dad.
I found the cottage, painted blue,
Like the sky, a gorgeous view.
But that all changed; I looked inside--
And Red was tanning Father's hide!
She danced and laughed as Father bled,
Her brand new cloak, drenched crimson red.
I scratched the door with trembling paw
Blocking out what I just saw.
It didn't work; I howled instead
Just begging for a slice of bread.
She opened up, surprised to see...
The only other wolf was me.
Lovely :)
