This is a recording of a prototype demo found on an unlabeled Atari 2600 cart, recently bought at the gift counter at a Greyhound bus station in Carson City. Rumor has it that in 1987, Atari's Sunnyvale engineers huddled together and devised a solution to the crisis facing the company, the onslaught of Nintendo and Sega. The engineers hailed the outcome as "20 Years Ahead of Its Time". Unfortunately, the marketing division also felt that it was twenty years ahead of its time, so this project never saw the light of day.

But now, it's available for the world to see and share and wonder what might have happened, had they been able to finish and release this phenomenal game.

You can grab the ROM from here: http://www.mathpirate.net/hold/Portal2600.bin
There's also prototype label art here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/redbeardmathpirate/3317017546/

  • Most of the time these custom made Atari games work on Cartridge. I found a guy to put the Angry Video Game nerd on a cart for me for $20 and I love it. PRoblem is he can only put games up to 32k on a cart. I doubt this one would be that big though?

  • @jimbox114 It's only 4K. There's a link to the ROM and the label art in the video description.

  • Say, what are the odds you have a binary of this still kicking around?

I'm planning on building one of Robert Demming's 512-in-1 multi-carts as a Christmas gift. After filtering out bad dumps/hacks/alts/demos I have a bit of blank space. This would be the most awesome Easter egg ever.

  • YouTube is a bit picky when it comes to links, so I couldn't put one in this comment. Instead, I added it to the video info.

I've never tried running it on an actual Atari, though (Couldn't get a ROM burner to work...), so I don't know how well it'll turn out.

  • The picture on the video link I found had Rick Roll written right on it.

Most poorly disguised Rick Roll ever, perhaps? :P
