This is my reaction to the Canadian federal election english debates that were on CBC on Oct 2, 2008. I explain the libertarian position on the various topics that were discussed; Ecomony, Environment, Health Care, Arts, Crime, Afghanistan

  • Not to nitpick, but Harper's with the Conservatives, not the PCs.

    Good commentary though.

  • You're right, I called them the PC's out of habit.

  • Describe as many societies as you can that resemble libertarian societies. I ask sincerely.

Curious, what about racism, fascism, we would do nothing about those problems, right?

  • Libertarian societies? There aren't any, because ther have alwasys been people willing to use force against another person to get their way.

Racism is a persons personal view, you can't do anything about that except show them their errors. Facism is a government problem.

  • We don't want to pay less taxes? That must be a joke.

  • Remember, gov't operates using violence (or the threat thereof).

Racism should be dealt with through voluntary cooperation.

Fascism is a problem of gov't power gone mad--you don't fix it by further increasing gov't power.

Libertarian societies? Um, none at all at the moment ;-)

  • Re: paying for health care + forgiving doctors' student loans:

-as long as it's voluntary. Remember, taxation is theft.

  • well I agree to a point, but you seem a little wrong for the majority of canada. I may be wrong but I think canadians for the most part dont want to pay less in taxes or anything like that, most of us are socialists whether we know it or not... I agree income tax is wrong and bad for the market. but I think we need to pay for our health care and I think forgiving doctors student loans is a great idea if there required to work in the country for at least 10-15 years.
