  • From Newsboys new 'God's Not Dead':

Q "How can a good god allow evil?"

A "God gave us freedom to choose. Man chose to do evil."

Man doesn't choose evil because of free will,he chooses evil because of ignorance. The essence of the question is, 'How can God allow the ignorance required for evil?'. Regardless of free will, God has all the tools of infinity to educate us, and he fails to do so. Either he is not all powerful, or he isn't trying.

It's a serious issue that 'free will' does not address

  • @Sollestio "Free Will?"

    What about it?

I don't see how it changes any of what I said.

  • @doubleKlutch Free will?

  • @dirt2peace You cannot 'try to do' the '10' Commandments, empowered by the Holy Spirit or not, without indoctrination.

"They teach us how to love others," This is indoctrination right here. There are not 10, but only 6 commandments that teach respect. The first 4 (prominent, no?) are about obedience to the Religious authority.

How can one truly explore the validity of alternatives when, under the threat of eternal torture, GOD commands you to be faithful to HIM alone?

  • @dirt2peace There are many differences that separate Christianity from other religions, but none of these differences redeem it from my perspective. The one central crime that all Religions commit proudly is that of dogma. Christianity is not immune to the stress on obedience through tools such as fear mongering and double-speak. All successful religions survive by commanding against their competition. Christianity goes so far as to make skepticism illegal, a key requirement of true discovery.

  • @dirt2peace "[We] also have the Holy Spirit to discern and empower."

What is the Holy Spirit? How can it be approached scientifically? There are no tools of measurement that can isolate or quantify it.

I believe that you have profound and real feelings around it, but isn't it possible that I have the same feelings when I connect to things larger than myself? Isn't it possible that this is a human trait across all philosophies? Isn't it possible that you simply label it with what is familiar?

  • In Christ Alone,in HIS Love I stand...:)

  • @doubleKlutch As for "hating" religion, I'm referring to the indoctrination, doing things a certain way because that was how I taught. Its the difference between following the 10 Commandments as a list of "thou shalt nots" and trying to do them, empowered by the Spirit, because they teach us how to love others and live at peace with them. BTW-I appreciate your comments to The Wubbzter. They were spot on with my feeling also.

  • @doubleKlutch Islam and Judaism only have their holy books to refer to, whereas followers of Jesus also have the Holy Spirit to discern and empower. This makes our faith alive. I see this as a "scientific" approach to faith. In fact, God has shown me so much that I have more "reason" to believe in Him than "faith" in Him.

  • @doubleKlutch My only reason for asking to focus on Christianity is that there are 2 critical differences from Islam and Judaism. Jesus and the Holy Spirit. I realize that there are many examples of Christians who "like to keep God in a box," meaning they know what they know and they don't want that challenged. But the Bible encourages us to "test the spirits" (1 John) to see if what is being taught or believed is consistent with scripture.
