I saw Infantino on a number of occasions in his younger days; he had a very beautiful voice at that time, but like so many tenors he began to sing roles to which his voice was not suited, and very quickly knocked the top off his voice . In this little song the voice is wonderfully lyric until the last note which is very tight and strained. The same thing happened with Di Stefano,Tagliavini and many more..why do they do it?
@1494220 The lighter male voices are particularly susceptible to this--lyric tenors especially. A good bass can growl out his low Ds till his tomb.

For the money....singers are often & repeatedly exploited until the 'blow their chops'....
