So, so good. The singing did it for me, more than the picking.

This picking style is commonly known as the "Merle Travis" form of picking. Basically a two part harmony. Chet also employs this in much of his picking. For anyone who has tried this knows that it may sound basic but its not.

I was just watching the video for him doing a cover of merle travis deep river blues and the chord progression and picking seem almost identical, was this a common form? could someone please shed some more light on this for a younger doc fan?

This song and "Deep River Blues" are both Delmore Brothers songs. If you are a fan of Doc Watson, find some songs from them. Doc got a lot from them.

Thanks for this video - I've just learnt Deep River Blues and was looking for other songs I hadn't heard; this fits the bill very nicely. Doc's style is beautifully simplified and relaxed - some Blues & Ragtime pickers overdo it beyond what is sufficient. He is an artist and advocate of the "less is more" school of fingerstyle players. Cool....

It is standard tuning. But he does uses other type of tuning like D and G tuning. Could be his unique cross-picking style giving that great sound.

He's not using a cross-picking style. It's a 2-finger finger style.

Good Grief! It was right on the video inset. But he is also known for his cross-picking style like "Nashville Blues". The guys is amazing.

He uses chords like most other guitarist. It is his cross-picking style that gives that unique style. It has NOTHING to do with his blindness.
