This is a review of something you should know!
Don't say: Today is rainy day. (Wrong!)
Don't say: Today is a rainy day. (Correct but not so natural.)
Do say: It's raining.
Do say: It's really coming down. (土砂降り！)
Do say: It's pouring.　（土砂降り！）
Do say: It's raining cats and dogs. (But I don't really use that last one.)　（＝土砂降り！）
to rain hard=doshaburi=どしゃぶり=土砂降り（standard）
