The final film for my MA degree is a short film on the issue of child labour involving a little girl and a Kathputli doll. The doll comes to life and starts dancing for the little girl and both are lost in a delightful fantasy.
Kathputlis are traditional Indian string puppets made and used by a gypsy tribe from Rajasthan to perform street-plays called 'Kathputli naach' in villages. 'Kath' means story and 'putli' means doll. Hence, a kathputli is a story-telling doll.
The duration of the film is approximately 3 minutes. The target audience is the general population of India, including all age groups.
The film is executed in mix media. The character animation is done in basic 2D hand-drawn animation using the classical lightbox. The backgrounds are constructed in 3D CGI. The characters cleaned up, coloured and edited and composited to the 3D backgrounds again using CGI tools. However, the final visual output of the entire film is 2D.
