This has always been a favorite song of mine. Billy Preston hit the mark in so many ways on this tune.

I began learning the bass line shortly after I got my bass in July and used it as a jam along tune for a few weeks. Once I got my midi controller keyboard and some VST instrument software I began trying to use it for getting ideas down and decided I needed to record something I was familiar with as a tutorial. I chose this.

I'll start with the software list. Cubase 3 SX is the host and recording app, the horns are trumpet, trombone, and sax sounds from Native Instruments Kontakt. The "Fender Rhodes" is from NI Elektrik Piano, it's a MKII with added chorus, anf the hammond sound is provided by NI's B4II VST set to the "Rock" preset. Drums are NI Battery 3, set to the Rock kit.

To create this, I first made a scratch track with the Rhodes playing simple chords, then worked out the horn lines. I then added the drums and a synth bass line. I then reworked the rhodes part note by note, pretty much layering parts, cutting and pasting re-layering as i went. Then came the organ part. That took forever. Using sheet music, tabs, piano chord web sites and my ear, I created it just about note by note.

I then went back, and did the same for the clavinet solo. Once done with all that I re-did the drums and recorded my Bass part.

I tehn spent a few days mixing and learning my way around the compressor plugin in cubase. A few mix tests later I got close to what you hear on this video. I then played my bass part again while fimling me and matched that video and audio up in adobe premiere.

This took forever. probably about 3 weeks but it was a fun learning experience. I'm still amazed that one person can do all of this stuff in a home studio.

As far as hardware goes, I used my Fender Jazz Bass and presonus firebox, my M-Audio Oxygen 49 Midi controller keyboard, M-audio Studiophile BX5a monitors etc

  • Mmm. it's me learning and playing for fun. It's one of the first recordings/video's I made. Learning how to use a DAW, VST's mix the whole bag, thanks for the comment :)

  • I like hearing songs not in the mainstream, obscure songs really challenge musicians learning skills, overplayed popular songs both new and old are easier to pick up on for they are beat into our heads all the time, making memorey and repitition all the more helpful, but songs like this make us think outside the box a bit and learn something not often heard,GREAT JOB on all your vids, nice change of pace from know-it-all teeny boppers spoon fed on Flea & Claypool(nothing against these two guys).

  • @cottonfever1221 Thanks for the great comments. I really appreciate you viewing and taking the time.

  • I am really impressed all the parts sound good. Is the a tab fro the bass part?

  • I've never used tabs, and the part I'm playing is just what I came up with, not the same as the record.

    Thanks for the comment :)
