Commando the chimp heads to his new home

Commando was captured and illegally held as a pet after his parents were killed by bushmeat hunters in the Central African Republic. Thanks to IFAW, he now lives with other chimps at the Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage, experiencing a life similar to one in the wild.

I say that if the bushmeat hunters are ever caught, they should be put into a cage with a troop of grown male chimps.

My mistake. Since posting my lice comment, I have discovered that the lice that infect chimps etc., are not the same lice that infect Human. Thus, there is no problem. The keeper cannot get lice from the animal. And vice-versa.

One more comment. This ape is likely teaming with lice, fleas, and other parasites. Did anyone de-louse it before handling it? To watch it gives one the "itchy's," if even from a remote location.

Xenophilist: Get your hands on a copy of Elizabeth Hess's book, "Nim Chimpsky." Read pages 187-188. In fact, a chimp named "Lucy" was returned to wild Africa in the late 1970's. Although difficult, the animal did adjust, living wild until 1987. In 1987, "Lucy" was shot by a poacher, stripped of her meat and then, eaten. Whatever. The point is that chimps, human-raised and pampered can adjust to life in the wild, in this case, thriving for some 10-years.

jane goodall is very much alive and this guy's lot in life is not great, living in an african primate sanctuary is far afield from western standards due to financial and logisitical problems. He would be much better off if he was not tortured and removed from his family. You cannot re-introduce chimpanzees back to the wild, period. The wild groups will not accept unknown individuals so his lot in life is forever a prisioner.

At least one lucky little guy escaped the bushmeat,exotic pet trade and experimentation route of life.Somewhere up there Jane Goodall is smiling.
